Road Accidents :(

India suffers from the highest number of deaths - around 1,05,000 in absolute terms annually- due to road accidents in the world owing to poor infrastructure and dangerous driving habits, the World Health Organisation said on Thursday.

As "road traffic crashes take the lives of nearly 1.3 million every year, and injure 20-50 million more" in the world, India along with China are listed among countries with the highest number of deaths.

Poor road infrastructure, failure to comply with speed limits, growing drinking and driving habits, and refusal to use proper motorcycle helmets and use child car seats, are among the main factors contributing to deaths from road crashes, WHO said in its report on 'Decade of Action for Road Safety 2011-2010'.
Despite strong laws and regulations, India has been unable to prevent the growing number of accidents on its roads. With around 1,05,000 death deaths annually, the country has overtaken China.

With growing middle class which is encouraged to buy new and latest vehicles, the youth- people aged between 15-29 years - have become the main victims of injuries.

"Over 90 per cent of road traffic deaths and injuries occur in low-income and middle-income countries, which have only 48 per cent of the world's registered vehicles," the report noted.

More disturbingly, a large number of deaths from road accidents are borne by "vulnerable road users" such as pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists.

Around 13 per cent of the victims from road-related deaths are pedestrians in India as compared to 15 per cent of accidents from passenger cars and taxis and 27 per cent of riders of motorised two-or-three wheelers.

The road traffic crashes, which result in the grief and suffering, contribute to economic losses to victims, their families, and nations as a whole, to the tune of 1-3 per cent of their respective gross national product, the report noted.

"Road traffic crashes are a growing health and development concern affecting all nations," said Dr Margaret China, WHO's director general, suggesting that it is important to have an action plan for an intensified response.

The global plan sets out a detailed programme of action that would call for improving the safety of road and vehicles, enhancing emergency services and building up road safety management.

More importantly, the plan calls on nations to enforce laws for using helmets, seat-belts and child restraints.

It emphasises strict and stern action against the drinking driving and those violating speed limits.

Road accidents killed 17 per hour in 2011

NEW DELHI: Government's claims to curb road fatalities clearly don't bear out in the nationwide loss of 390 lives daily. While, 17 lives were lost in road accidents every hour last year, the corresponding figure was 15 for 2010.
Government sources said the latest figures from all the states and Union Territories, which will be published soon, show that at least 1.42 lakh people died in road accidents in 2011, an increase of over 7,000 from 2010.
Though some of the states have successfully either reduced fatalities or stabilized the trend, Uttar Pradesh and Punjab have recorded a spurt in fatalities.
In UP, the deaths increased by at least 30% (it was 15,175 in 2010), while in Punjab 3,613 people died in 2011 as compared to 3,400 in the previous year. "We are worried. The roads are getting better and people are driving at high speed, while there are deficiencies in traffic engineering. Until it becomes a mission for political leadership at all levels to reduce road deaths, we will not be able to save lives," said Kamaljeet Soi of Punjab State Road Safety Council.
The figures supplied by the worst performing states have shocked the road transport and highways ministry, which is primarily responsible and accountable for nationwide road safety.
Early this year some states had submitted provisional data that projected the likely fall of road deaths by 1% in 2011.
Incidentally, two of the deadliest spots in the country fall in UP. Kayampur More in Aligarh topped the list, having claimed 169 lives, while 100 people died at NH stretch close to Jaigurdev Ashram in Mathura last year.
Road safety expert Rohit Baluja urged the government not to look at the figures "only as statistics". "Every life we lose counts and high percentage of those killed are earning members in their families," he explained.
India is signatory to the Decade for Action declaration by the United Nations to reduce deaths by 50% by 2020.
Times View
India's status as the world leader in deaths due to road accidents is a matter of national shame. The fact is that a large proportion of these deaths can be prevented by simple measures. The most important of these is strict enforcement of traffic rules, which is conspicuous by its absence in our cities as well as on highways. Other measures like preventing overloading of vehicles and making sure that highways have a divider separating the two carriageways would also make a huge difference. Surely this is not asking for too much. Considering the number of people killed each year, not taking these simple steps amounts to gross negligence.

Causes of road accidents

The various causes of road accidents are:
  • Road Users - Excessive speed and rash driving, violation of traffic rules, failure to perceive traffic situation or sign or signal in adequate time, carelessness, fatigue, alcohol, sleep etc.
  • Vehicle - Defects such as failure of brakes, steering system, tyre burst, lighting system .
  • Road Condition - Skidding road surface, pot holes, ruts.
  • Road design - Defective geometric design like inadequate sight distance, inadequate width of shoulders, improper curve design, improper traffic control devices and improper lighting,.
  • Environmental factors -unfavourable weather conditions like mist, snow, smoke and heavy rainfall which restrict normal visibility and and makes driving unsafe.
  • Other causes -improper location of advertisement boards, gate of level crossing not closed when required etc..

Accident investigation

The accident data collection involves extensive investigation which involves the following procedure:
  1. Reporting: It involves basic data collection in form of two methods:
    • Motorist accident report - It is filed by the involved motorist involved in all accidents fatal or injurious.
    • Police accident report - It is filed by the attendant police officer for all accidents at which an officer is present. This generally includes fatal accidents or mostly accidents involving serious injury required emergency or hospital treatment or which have incurred heavy property damage.
  2. At Scene-Investigation: It involves obtaining information at scene such as measurement of skid marks, examination of damage of vehicles, photograph of final position of vehicles, examination of condition and functioning of traffic control devices and other road equipments.
  3. Technical Preparation: This data collection step is needed for organization and interpretation of the study made. In this step measurement of grades, sight distance, preparing drawing of after accident situation, determination of critical and design speed for curves is done.
  4. Professional Reconstruction: In this step effort is made to determine from whatever data is available how the accident occurs from the available data. This involves accident reconstruction which has been discussed under Section No.7 in details. It is professionally referred as determining “behavioral” or “mediate” causes ofaccident.
  5. Cause Analysis: It is the effort made to determine why the accident occurred from the data available and the analysis of accident reconstruction studies..

Safety measures related to engineering

The various measures of engineering that may be useful to prevent accidents are enumerated below
  1. Factors relating to the road – elements of road that directly affect the driving of a vehicle are traffic signs, changes in direction of road, three legged intersection and various other things.
  2. Factors connected with traffic – Other vehicles, cycles, pedestrians.
  3. Factors related indirectly to the vehicle motion – Building and structures that strike the eye, vegetation, landscape, etc.
So using the laws of visual perception certain measures have been suggested:
  1. Contrast in visibility of the road should be achieved by provision of elements that differ from its surrounding by colours, pattern such as shoulder strips, shoulder covered with grass, edge markings.
  2. Providing road side vegetation is an effective means.
  3. The visibility of crown of trees from a distant location is also very useful in visual guiding.
  4. The provision of guard rails of different contrasting colours also takes drivers attention and prevent from monotonous driving.

Safety measures related to enforcement

The various measures of enforcement that may be useful to prevent accidents at spots prone to accidents are enumerated below. These rules are revised from time to time to make them more comprehensive.

Speed control

Checks on spot speed of all vehicles should be done at different locations and timings and legal actions on those who violate the speed limit should be taken

Training and supervision

The transport authorities should be strict while issuing licence to drivers of public service vehicles and taxis. Driving licence of the driver may be renewed after specified period, only after conducting some tests to check whether the driver is fit

Medical check

The drivers should be tested for vision and reaction time at prescribed intervals of time

Safety measures related to education

The various measures of education that may be useful to prevent accidents are enumerated below.

Education of road users

The passengers and pedestrians should be taught the rules of the road, correct manner of crossing etc. by introducing necessary instruction in the schools for the children and by the help of posters exhibiting the serious results due to carelessness of road users.

Safety drive

Imposing traffic safety week when the road users are properly directed by the help of traffic police as a means of training the public. Training courses and workshops should be organised for drivers in different parts of the country.

" I lost few of my beloved friends in Road Accidents, its difficult to hide the agony and pain, hard to digest the fact that someone you love is dead ! Our eyes might run out of tears, but the Heart's tears are eternal "

Priyanka Chopra's First Item Song 'Babli Badmaash' - Not that Great ??

Priyanka Chopra's first ever item song 'Babli Badmaash' has been released.

The song, which is featured in gangster film Shootout at Wadala, has been awarded a U/A rating, The Times of India reports.

Tanuj Garg of Balaji Motion Pictures, the producers of the film, said: "After submitting 'Babli Badmaash' for certification, we were informed that it would get an 'A' because it was an item track. We informed the board that the industry was not aware of such a rule and that it would warrant a discussion between both parties.

"We were later told by the CBFC that there was no blanket directive and songs would be certified according to their content."

The song was originally granted an 'A' certificate after a women's body complained about the representation of females in item songs.

However, the CBFC's revising committee overturned the decision, certifying the song with a 'U/A' rating.

In the video, Chopra is seen dancing in a club setting wearing an 'LED suit' which was reportedly inspired by Amitabh Bachchan's 'bulb suit' in Yaarana

The 30-year-old star has reportedly been paid Rs 2.8 crores for the item number, which has been described as having "glamour... but no vulgarity".

The story of gangster Manya Surve, Shootout at Wadala has an ensemble cast including John Abraham, Anil Kapoor, Manoj Bajpayee, Tusshar Kapoor and Kangna Ranaut. It is directed by Sanjay Gupta, and is scheduled to release on May 1.

"The punishment to Kasab is a true tribute to the victims and martyrs of the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks," Patil said.

Meanwhile, home minister Sushil Shinde said: "Indian mission in Islamabad informs Pakistangovernment about Kasab's hanging through letter. Pakistan refuses to take the letter, which was then faxed."

Yash Chopra DEAD ! King of Romance is No More

Legendary Bollywood filmmaker Yash Chopra, 80, passes away on Sunday evening at the Lilavati Hospital in Bandra, where he was being treated for dengue for the past one week.

Chopra, who was popularly known as the ‘King of Romance’ for his several films in that genre, directed some of the best Bollywood films .
Born on September 27, 1932 in Lahore, Chopra began his career as an assistant director to his older brother BR Chopra and filmmaker IS Johar.
In the five-decade long career that followed, Chopra made romantic films like Silsila, Kabhi Kabhi, Chandni, Lamhe, Dil Toh Pagal Hai and Veer Zaara.
Chopra, who has won six National Film Awards and 11 Filmfare awards, including four Filmfare Award for best director, was honoured with the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 2001 and the Padma Bhushan in 2005 for his contributions towards Indian cinema.
Chopra’s first film was Dhool Ka Phool in 1959, which was about illegitimacy, and he continued making several socially hard-hitting films, including Dharmaputra.
His action thriller Deewar established superstar Amitabh Bachchan as the 'angry young man'. Chopra was the one who began the concept of multi-starrers in Waqt (1965).
His last movie Jab Tak Hai Jaan starring Shah Rukh Khan, Katrina Kaif and Anushka Sharma is scheduled for release during Diwali.
He still had to shoot a song for the film in Switzerland, a destination Chopra made popular among cinegoers in India.
Yash Raj Chopra (27 September 1932 – 21 October 2012[1]) was an Indian film directorscreenwriter and film producer, predominantly working inHindi cinema. Chopra began his career as an assistant director to I.S. Johar and his elder brother, B.R. Chopra. He made his directorial debut withDhool Ka Phool in 1959, a melodrama about illegitimacy and followed it with the hard-hitting social drama Dharmputra (1961). Encouraged by the success of both films, the Chopra brothers made several more movies together during the late fifties and sixties. Chopra then rose to prominence after the commercially and critically successful drama, Waqt (1965), which pioneered the concept of multi-starters in Bollywood.
In 1973, Chopra founded his own production company, Yash Raj Films, and launched it with Daag: A Poem of Love (1973), a successful melodrama about a polygamous man. His success continued in the seventies, with some of Indian cinema's most successful and iconic films, including the action thriller Deewar (1975) which established Amitabh Bachchan as the "angry young man" of Bollywood, the romantic drama Kabhi Kabhie (1976) andTrishul (1978). The eighties marked a professional setbacks in Chopra's career as several films he directed and produced in that period failed to leave a mark at the Indian box office, notably Silsila (1981), Mashaal (1984) and Vijay (1988). However, in 1989, Chopra directed the commercially and critically successful cult film Chandni which became instrumental in ending the era of violence in Bollywood and bringing back music into Hindi films.
Chopra then directed and produced the cult classic Lamhe in 1991. Considered by critics and Chopra himself as his best work to date. The film was critically acclaimed and became one of the biggest Bollywood hits in the overseas market. Chopra followed it with the box-office hit and trend setterDarr (1993). Starring the then-débutant Shahrukh Khan, it showed a sympathetic look at obsessive love and defied the image of the conventional hero. Since then, Chopra directed three more romantic films, all starring Khan; Dil To Pagal Hai (1997), Veer-Zaara (2004) and Jab Tak Hai Jaan (2012) before he announced his retirement from directing in 2012. Chopra is chairman and founder of both the motion picture production and distribution company Yash Raj Films which ranks as India's biggest production company as of 2006 and the Yash Raj Studios.
Chopra's career has spanned over five decades and over 50 films. He is considered among one of the greatest filmmakers in the history of Hindi cinema. Chopra has won several film awards, including six National Film Awards and eleven Filmfare awards including four Filmfare Award for Best Director. The Government of India honoured him with the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 2001 and the Padma Bhushan in 2005 for his contributions towards Indian cinema. BAFTA presented him with a lifetime membership for his contribution to the films, making him the first Indian to receive the honour in the 59-year history of the academy. His last movie was Jab Tak Hai Jaan (2012).

PSY – Gangnam Style Lyrics (ENGLISH TRANSLATION)

     ENGLISH TRANSLATION :
Oppa is Gangnam style
Gangnam style
A girl who is warm and humanle during the day
A classy girl who know how to enjoy the freedom of a cup of coffee
A girl whose heart gets hotter when night comes
A girl with that kind of twist
I’m a guy
A guy who is as warm as you during the day
A guy who one-shots his coffee before it even cools down
A guy whose heart bursts when night comes
That kind of guy
Beautiful, loveable
Yes you, hey, yes you, hey
Beautiful, loveable
Yes you, hey, yes you, hey
Now let’s go until the end
Oppa is Gangnam style, Gangnam style
Oppa is Gangnam style, Gangnam style
Oppa is Gangnam style
Eh- Sexy Lady, Oppa is Gangnam style
Eh- Sexy Lady oh oh oh oh
A girl who looks quiet but plays when she plays
A girl who puts her hair down when the right time comes
A girl who covers herself but is more sexy than a girl who bares it all
A sensable girl like that
I’m a guy
A guy who seems calm but plays when he plays
A guy who goes completely crazy when the right time comes
A guy who has bulging ideas rather than muscles
That kind of guy
Beautiful, loveable
Yes you, hey, yes you, hey
Beautiful, loveable
Yes you, hey, yes you, hey
Now let’s go until the end
Oppa is Gangnam style, Gangnam style
Oppa is Gangnam style, Gangnam style
Oppa is Gangnam style

Eh- Sexy Lady oh oh oh oh
On top of the running man is the flying man, baby baby
